NOTE
Since you are using AOL as your ISP you cannot get multiple AOL accounts to log on through WinProxy. This is a limitation of AOL as an ISP. If you are using a local Internet Provider and want people to use their own AOL accounts then you will be able to make a connection to AOL using multiple accounts. Using AOL as your ISP means that your client computers can use a browser or another program to connect to the Internet, but they cannot open their own AOL program and try logging on. AOL allows only one connection per session, which is why your client computers cannot log on to AOL. When using a local Internet Provider and trying to log into AOL, AOL sees the connection coming in across the Internet and allows the connection. This is why when using a local ISP you can get multiple AOL accounts logged on. One caveat to this is that each account must be unique. The best way to explain this is that each AOL account comes with 5 usernames. Once one of those usernames is logged on the other 4 cannot be used from another computer to try and log in again. You would need to use another AOL account with its own 5 usernames. |
To use AOL 4.0 as your Internet Service Provider with WinProxy you will need to:
- Install AOL 4.0 on the server computer and verify that you have a working connection to AOL. By 'working connection' we mean that you should be able to:
- dial and connect to AOL, and
- perform internet activities, such as browsing, sending/receiving mail, etc. through that connection.
- Then configure TCP/IP on your local network by assigning IP addresses to both the server computer and the client computers. Verify that the client computers can "see" the server computer. To do this open up a Dos Prompt and using the 'ping' command ping the IP address of the server computer.
** WinProxy 3.0 includes a DHCP server (Dynamic Host Control Protocol), which can assign IP addresses to the computers on your internal network. If you want to use the DHCP server built into WinProxy set your client computers to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and disable DNS. WinProxy will assign IP addresses, gateway information, and DNS information to each system once WinProxy has been configured.
- You are now ready to install WinProxy onto the server computer, i.e. the system that has the AOL (dial-up) connection. Run WinProxy's installation file. Once all files have been installed onto your computer WinProxy will ask you to restart the system.
- Once you have rebooted and the operating system is back up, WinProxy will automatically start the Installation Wizard.
- The first screen you will see is the one below:
- The first screen you will see is the one below:
- The next screen you will get is this:
When it asks you if you are using AOL as your Internet Service Provider, select 'Yes' and click on 'Next'.
- Click on ‘Next' to get to this screen:
We strongly suggest that you read the Client Configuration document that appears at the end of this wizard so that you fully understand the restrictions when using AOL as your ISP.
- Once entered in click on 'Next'. At this point WinProxy will test your connection out to AOL and verify all information. If for some reason something fails then WinProxy will give you the option of going back and fixing the information that was entered in.
Once WinProxy checks the settings you can begin using WinProxy.
Enter in the password for your default screen name (note: each AOL account allows up to five different user names, you must enter in the password for the original account).
As mentioned earlier, WinProxy can assign the client computers IP addresses and other pertinent information so that they can connect through WinProxy. What you will need to do with the client computers is simply reboot each computer. When they come back to the operating system they will request an IP address and WinProxy will assign a unique IP address to each system. The client computers can now use their browsers by simply opening them. WinProxy will automatically detect a connection request and connect to AOL. Once connected the main WinProxy window will look like this:
You can change any of the connection settings by clicking File -> Settings -> General -> Dial-Up Setup.
